FLASHBACK CORNER #1

Hello and welcome to the first Flashback Corner, where we look at past wrestling. Since this WrestleMania week, I will begin with the first WRESTLEMANIA. I will not go play-by-play because that will take too long.

1. Tito Santana vs. The Executioner: Tito Santana wins with a figure-four leglock following a flying forearm. * Aside: The Executioner is Buddy Rose before he becomes regulated as an overweight jobber.

2. King Kong Bundy w/ Jimmy Hart vs. SD Jones: Bundy wins with an avalanche and big splash in 9 seconds. DUD Aside: Little known fact, Bundy had worked with Hart in CWA Memphis in the early 80s. After WM1, he would become managed by Heenan.

3. Ricky Steamboat vs. Matt Borne: Ricky Steamboat wins with a flying body press. ** Aside: Matt Borne, son of wrestler Tony Borne, had worked in Mid-South with Ted DiBiase and Jim Duggan as the Rat Pack. He would later be Doink the Clown and Big Josh in the 90s before dying in 2013.

4. David Sammartino w/ Bruno Sammartino vs. Brutus Beefcake w/ Johnny Valiant: Match ends in a double disqualification when Valiant and Bruno get involved. DUD Aside: This was the only PPV David Sammartino appeared on in the WWE. He would work with AWA, Herb Adams’ UWF, and WCW with little success.

5. WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Greg Valentine (c) w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Junkyard Dog: Junkyard Dog wins by count out, although Valentine pinned him using the ropes. Santana (who wants his title back) points it out the referee, who administers the count. I’d rather see Santana have a title rematch, but that’s me. **

6. WWF Tag Team Title Match: US Express (Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo) (c) w/ Captain Lou Albano vs. Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik w/ Freddie Blassie: Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff win by using Blassie’s cane on Rotundo. I love Blassie’s denial about his cane in the post-match interview. **1/2

7. Body Slam Challenge for $15,000: Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd w/ Bobby Heenan: Andre wins by slamming Studd. Gets the money and tosses it into the crowd before Heenan swipes it. *1/2

8. WWF Women’s Title Match: Leilani Kai (c) w/ Fabulous Moolah vs. Wendi Richter w/ Cyndi Lauper: Wendi Richter wins with a reversal pin. ** Aside: Richter would later loose the title to Moolah under the guise of The Spider Lady, prompting Richter to leave WWE. She would not return to WWE until her Hall of Fame induction in 2010.

9. Hulk Hogan & Mr. T w/ Jimmy Snuka vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper & Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff w/ Cowboy Bob Orton, Jr.; Guest referees- Muhammad Ali and Pat Patterson: Hulk Hogan & Mr. T win after Bob Orton accidentally hits Orndorff. Looking at this again, I wished they made it into a six-man tag and utilize Orton and Snuka. ***

OVERALL GRADE: C; It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t all that bad.

Best Match: Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff

Worst Match: David Sammartino vs. Burtus Beefcake; It would be easy to go with the Bundy squash SD Jones, but I went with a different match.

Next Flashback Corner will be WrestleMania 2!!
